What's in a Name?'

Blog post featured image

When I started working on Elikonas (before I knew what I would call it), I knew the name would matter.

Not just how it sounded — but what it carried with it.

Names shape perception. They hint at values. They tell a story long before anyone reads a mission statement or sees a product demo. I wanted the name Elikonas to reflect not only what we’re building, but why we’re building it.

That story begins in Greek mythology.

Mount Elikonas and the Nine Muses

Most people know that the Greek gods ruled from Mount Olympus. What’s less well known is that before Olympus, their center of gravity was Mount Elikonas (also spelled Helicon).

Mount Elikonas was associated not with power or conquest, but with learning, creativity, and inspiration.

This is where the story of the Nine Muses begins.

According to myth, Zeus spent nine nights with Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. From each night, a daughter was born — together becoming the nine muses. Each muse represented a different domain of human curiosity: music, poetry, history, science, dance, astronomy, and more.

The god Apollo, associated with the sun, truth, and knowledge, took on the role of guiding them. He taught the muses the arts and sciences and encouraged them to explore what fascinated them most.

When Apollo saw how deeply they loved learning — not out of obligation, but out of joy — he brought them to Mount Elikonas, a place where they could continue to grow, create, and inspire freely.

The muses didn’t just learn.

They inspired the love of learning in others.

And they did it on Mount Elikonas.

Why the Platform Is Called Elikonas

The idea of inspiration and the love of learning stayed with me and I knew I had a name for the platform I was building.

Elikonas is meant to be a place where curiosity leads.
Where people explore what genuinely interests them.
Where learning is driven by inspiration rather than pressure.

We’re building a platform for people who want to shape their own paths, discover what fascinates them, and build lives of purpose around the ideas they care about most.

Calling it Elikonas felt like an invitation to that tradition.

Designing a Logo With Meaning

The story continues in the visual identity.

The logo was designed so that every element carries symbolism:

  • The “E” emrges from the shadow of a mountain — Mount Elikonas itself
  • The sun rising behind it represents Apollo
  • The nine rays of light extending outward symbolize the Nine Muses, radiating inspiration

The logo is a simple composition, but one rooted in meaning: learning, guidance, curiosity, and growth.

Designing for Accessibility

Symbolism wasn’t the only design consideration.

Accessibility mattered just as much.

Many people experience some form of color blindness, especially difficulty distinguishing between reds and greens. Research shows that these colors can still be perceived clearly when they offer enough contrast and lean toward lighter, more visible parts of the spectrum.

The sun needed to be yellow — that symbolism was essential. But the text and background needed to be easy to see for as many people as possible.

Blue is one of the most universally visible colors, so I chose a blue that leans slightly toward green for warmth and balance, paired with carefully used red for emphasis.

After researching accessibility and testing combinations, I landed on a palette that remains clear and legible for both colorblind and non-colorblind viewers.

Design should never be a barrier to understanding.

A Name, A Logo, A Philosophy

Every element of Elikonas is intentional.

Not because branding matters more than substance — but because symbols shape how people feel about learning, about possibility, and about themselves.

At its core, Elikonas reflects a simple belief:

Knowledge, creativity, and progress don’t come from force. They come from fascination.

That idea will remain at the heart of everything we build.

Thank you for being here and for being part of this journey so early on.
